Sometimes a place you visit hits you so hard in the emotional breadbasket, the only thing you can do is write a song.

That’s precisely what Americana-rooted Chicano rocker Joshua Josué has done upon his return from the magical city of Guadalajara in Mexico. On his new single “She is Guadalajara,” the Portland, Oregon-based artist reflects on the reverence he felt for the city when he was there and the sorrow he experienced following his departure.

For Josué, the song was a way to channel the duality of his admiration for both Mariachi bands and the music of The Smiths through a geographical love letter.

“To fall in love with something as timeless as ‘The City of Roses’ only to walk away from her is nothing short of heartbreaking,” he tells Rock & Roll Globe of “She Is Guadalajara,” which can be heard below. “I wanted to create something that would really connect with people on a deep level. I think ‘She is Guadalajara’ captures the essence of what it means to love and to feel loss, and I hope listeners find solace and comfort in the music.”

An album is in the works, but won’t be ready until next year. For now, fans of Los Lobos and Alejandro Escovedo alike should add this talented highwayman to their lists of ones to watch.
