Eleanor Underhill is known in Americana circles for her dazzling skills on her trademark open-back banjo.

But on her latest song, “And She Said,” the North Carolina-based musician and songwriter moves away from her deep roots in progressive bluegrass to try her hand at crafting a modern pop tune.

“I’ve been teaching music part-time in the ‘School of Rock’ style at a middle school for the last few years and my brain has been infected by the pop hooks and sing-along choruses that the kids like,” Underhill admits. “I wanted to create purposefully fun music that would give people permission to be silly and joyful, and give some respite from the struggle in our lives.”

“‘And She Said’ is a song to cheer us on in the tough times,” she explains of the song’s impetus. “’She’ represents an amalgamation of women in my life–even myself–who serve to encourage us to keep working, keep being and keep the faith. I hope that this track will serve to empower others on their respective paths.”
