Paying respect to the classic and modern soul and jazz greats who inspire them is the top priority of Anaconga, the fourth album by UK collective Citrus Sun, led by Bluey of the famed British funk collective Incognito.

“I hope that the rhythms wrap themselves around your consciousness and the music slithers into your soul, whilst you bask in the light of the Citrus Sun,” enthuses the man born Jean-Paul Maunick of the new album, which featured rousing renditions of material by the likes of Maynard Ferguson (“Mister Mellow”), Erykah Badu (“Honey”) and Ronnie Foster (“Mystic Brew”) alongside lively originals like “In Search of the Blue Note” and “Santiago.”

The first single from Anaconga, which is Citrus Sun’s fourth album on the Dome Records imprint, is a faithful rendition of “Down for the Third Time,” a 1978 track by smooth soul legend Bobby Caldwell, which features Bluey’s Incongnito bandmate Natalie Duncan on vocals with Dominic Glover and Charlie Allen tearing it up on trumpet and guitar respectively.

Rock & Roll Globe is honored to premiere the music video for “Down for the Third Time” prior to the album’s release on June 14th today on the site, which you can check out below.

“My intention with this video was to capture the mood of the song and not have too many distractions from Bobby Caldwell’s lyrics about life’s cycles of prosperity and adversity,” Bluey reveals in an exclusive quote. “Like a fighter going down for the third time, for some down on their luck. It’s a reminder that nothing lasts forever, but it is also a message of hope that comes from human resilience and the journey to new beginnings. I wanted that translated by going from black and white to colour, using Natalie’s eyes and mouth as a focus with the flow of her gestures backed by the simple but captivating guitar riff played by Charlie Allen. It’s a less is more video that I hope draws you into the song!”

Citrus Sun will performing at London’ legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott’s on June 13th to officially launch the release of Anaconga.
