Instrumental post-metal is alive and well in 2025, living in Portland, Oregon, through the talents of The Mighty Missoula.

Founded in 2015, the combination of Eric Mapson (Bass, Guitar), Ryly Roberts (Guitar, Keyboard, Effects), Robby Russell (Lead Guitar) and Adam Schmid (Drums, Percussion, Synths) have been making waves in the Pacific Northwest across three acclaimed albums in Au Nord (2017), Remnants (2020) and Virga (2021).

With their anticipated fourth LP, Ghost in the Mountain, The Mighty Missoula was set on crafting cinéma vérité in sonic form, allowing the listener to open up their inner mind’s camera eye while adding more heaviness to their sound. More crunch.

“Early on, we knew that the record needed to feel like the score to an inward-facing film, or a grand tale,” explains Mapson. “The songs needed to feel like chapters.”

“It’s nearly impossible to ignore the volcanoes — sometimes distant, sometimes right there. They’re always on the horizon,” Russell adds. “They became a kind of character in the album. Silent… looming… beautiful… destructive. That duality sat in the back of our minds the whole time we were writing this record, as we attempted to capture the quiet awe we feel living near these volcanic landscapes.”

Spanning 13 tracks and over 70 minutes, this instrumental double LP was written, recorded, and produced entirely by the band in Portland, Oregon.

“We didn’t want to make a double album — we needed to” explains Russell. “We actually had an opportunity to work with a label on this record, but understandably asked if we could trim the album down to fit on a single LP. So, we sat with the request. Talked it over. And ultimately agreed: this album needed to exist in its full form. We didn’t make the practical choice. We made an honest one.”

“‘Signals’ sits near the beginning of the story we’re telling with Ghost in the Mountain… a 2LP album that traces a kind of emotional and environmental arc,” says Russell. “It marks a shift… the moment where something breaks open and the possibility of new life begins to emerge. That idea felt especially resonant for us here in the Pacific Northwest, where stepping just beyond the city can feel like landing on another planet. The Cascades, the lava fields, the silence… it’s all in the DNA of this record.

“When we shared the track with UK-based filmmakers Sam Wiehl and Kit Monteith — whose work we’d admired through some of our favorite bands — they came back with this concept of glowing greenhouses in desolate, volcanic terrain. It was a perfect match. The video reflects that quiet tension… trying to grow something fragile in an unforgiving place.”

With its Jean Michel Jarre-meets-Explosions in the Sky vibes, “Signals” will appeal to fans of the instru-metal movement with groups like Pelican and Russian Circles.
