Ted Sablay Shares ‘Invisible Weight’

New solo album from The Killers’ touring guitarist out this fall

It’s been nearly 20 years since Ted Sablay joined The Killers as the band’s auxiliary touring guitarist, bringing an extra flex to the Las Vegas band’s hit repertoire on the concert stage.

But today, the now-musical director for Brandon Flowers and the boys is stepping out of the spotlight to share “Invisible Weight,” the first single from his forthcoming solo album State & Motion, which focuses on his evolution as a songwriter in his own right.

“This is not ‘The Killers’ sideman finally speaks’,” says Sablay. “Rather, this record is, fundamentally, about the difference between bearing something and choosing something.”

At 10 songs and 38 minutes, State & Motion finds its lane in the Heartland rock sound of Cougar-era John Mellencamp and The War on Drugs, aided in the studio by a formidable rhythm section comprised of drummer Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello’s Attractions and Wallflowers bassist Whynot Jansveld.

“Four years of songs written between tours about family, endurance and what we build on our own terms,” Sablay writes on the front page of his website. “Ten songs, made to be heard front to back. It ends somewhere good.”

On “Invisible Weight,” which you can check out below, Sablay reflects on the thankless task of being dependable without getting recognition for it against a Petty-esque energy that coasts along like a convertible speeding down a stretch of road.

“’Invisible Weight’ is about the specific tax of being the person everyone counts on: reading the room, managing other people’s states, putting out a steady output that never registers as output because it doesn’t have a name,” Sablay explains. “I circled that title for a couple of years before the song showed up. The bridge is where it turns. Someone finally asks what’s wrong, and everything after that is about how being seen, even for a second, changes what the weight does to you.”

State & Motion will be in stores and on all DSPs Sept. 25.
