Lifes Rich Pageant Turns 40
A quick salute to an R.E.M. classic

For most R.E.M. fans of a certain age, chances are you got into the band through Document, Green or Out of Time.
However, once we hit our stride as fans, the majority of us often cite the group’s magnificent fourth LP, Lifes Rich Pageant, to be their favorite — at least from the I.R.S. era.
Originally released on this day 40 years ago, the album was produced by Don Gehman at John Mellencamp’s Bellmont Mall Studio in Indiana, and presented a clearer, bolder vision of the R.E.M. sound than previously heard on Murmur, Reckoning and Fables of the Reconstruction.
“Don (Gehman, the album’s producer) is good at layering things so there can be a lot of things going on but you can still hear everything,” bassist Mike Mills told music journalist Annie Zaleski for diffuser.fm in 2021. “And as far as Michael’s vocals go, it’s a combination of things: Michael is getting better at what he’s doing, and he’s getting more confident at it. And I think that shows up in the projection of his voice. The overall sound of everything was so good, we didn’t mind having the vocals mixed as loud as they were.”

At the time, critics were enrapt with accolades, including Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone, who saw the album as a bridge from college radio to AOR and hailed it as “the most outward looking record R.E.M. has made.”
As for me, I got into Lifes Rich Pageant shortly after discovering R.E.M. in eighth grade via Green. It quickly fell into heavy rotation in my Sony Sports Walkman, giving me a shield of coolness protecting me from the bullying of future MAGA voters on the school bus thanks to the jangly loudness of songs like “Begin the Begin,” “These Days,” “I Believe” and “Just A Touch” and the contemplative beauty of “Fall On Me” and “The Flowers of Guatemala.” Hell, I even learned how to play “Underneath the Bunker” on guitar.
