If you’re looking for true authenticity in your modern country music, look no further than LA’s Dominique and the Diamonds.

Led by Colombian-American frontwoman Dominique Gomez, the Diamonds deliver classic country vibes with the suave tightness of a crack team of Nashville Cats as Ms. Gomez channels Patsy Cline recalibrated for the TikTok era.

The band have just announced the release of their first EP and the debut of its first single, the positively Patsy-esque “For A Fool,” which slyly laments the trappings of the current day dating scene in LA.

“I was 28, single, and could finally see through these types of guys so clearly,” she explains. “I actually started to feel bad for them at a certain point. You’ve got to be real sad deep down to just use a person to satisfy your own loneliness and boredom.”

“For a Fool,” is accompanied by a video directed and shot by their bass player Hamilton Boyce at the bar Dominique works at, Bar Flores. A Latina owned bar in Echo Park, Flores is a bar famous for its tequila and mezcal served by a staff of predominantly female bartenders of color.

It’s a perfect pairing for Gomez, whose work with the Diamonds on the EP no doubt echoes the sound of old school honky tonk barrooms and jukeboxes with 45s from Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys, the Flying Burrito Brothers and Emmylou Harris.

Produced by Glenn Brigman (Triptides) in his mountain home studio, the band’s self titled, debut EP was recorded using a mixture of analog and digital equipment amongst the forest of Crestline, CA. For Gomez, playing to the essence of her craft’s golden age allows her to identify with both aspects of her heritage.

“I write country music and love to sing country songs, but I’ve always associated myself with the Colombian half of my identity more than the white side,” she explains. “My Dad and his immediate family immigrated to the U.S. from Colombia in 1966 and they’d endured so much struggle in the process. Then, you have my Mom’s side who were small town farmers in Minnesota and Southern trailer park girls. When you look at me, you see a brown girl, and I fucking love that. And when I was younger, I felt like I was forced to fit into a category, but I was too white to be Latina and too Latina to be white. It’s a beautiful thing to have the wisdom now to embrace both and just be me.”

The Dominique and the Diamonds EP will be released on June 13th.
