No doubt one of the wildest stories of the decade is how glitchy Britpop group Panchiko has been rediscovered by Gen Z and Gen Alpha thanks to the discovery of a 1999 demo at an English charity shop and uploaded to 4chan in 2016.

Ten years later, I got my own 14-year-old son asking me for a copy of said demo, an EP entitled D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, thanks to its second life in the wake of this random discovery.

Adding a further wrinkle to the tale is the fact that the 4chan user who picked up D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L got it on a CD with considerable disc rot, which led to further speculation as to the identity of Panchiko, giving birth to an online community intent on finding out who they were. Turns out they were a bunch of teens hopped up on video games, anime and Ninja Tune.

The fact that Panchiko was the subject of a huge online identity search was unknown to the band themselves until 2020, when frontman/guitarist Owain Davies received a message from a fan via Facebook Messenger.

A year later, in December 2021, the band performed their very first show in over 20 years in their hometown of Nottingham, England, and then headed straight for the United States to bring D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L to the American youth largely responsible for resurrecting their career.

Panchiko have since released two compilation albums remastering their older music: a reissue of D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L combining their first two EPs, and Ferric Oxide (Demos 1997–2001).

In the last several years, Panchiko — now composed of original members Andy Wright (keyboardist and producer) and Davies (vocalist and guitarist), alongside new members guitarist Robert Harris, bassist Shaun Ferreday, and drummer Jon Nellen — have toured the world and made two albums — 2023’s Failed at Math and 2025’s Ginkgo — with a third on the way called Chimera.

The band recently shared lead single “One Car Hits Another (ft. Mei Semones),” which finds them leaning further into their Britpop roots but with a Flaming Lips-ish gesture of grandeur.

“I imagined a serene waltz of a car crash, whilst onlookers and soon-to-be roadkill alike all sing along watching the slow motion collision unfold,” said Davies of the song, the video of which can be seen below. “A hand shake, or a car crash, the matter of fact news report describing the incident never makes it clear where the true devastation lies… one car hits another… one hand shakes another; they’re both meetings, technically.”

Shortly after the release of Chimera in April, Panchiko will be coming back to the States for a full U.S. tour, with support from billy woods, Puzzle, Clarion, Korea Girl. Alison’s Halo, She’s Green, sundots, Novulent, and Stomach Book. Check the full date rundown below.

Panchiko just wrapped a sold-out headlining tour of the UK and Ireland, a run that includes Roundhouse in London and Dublin’s Vicar Street.
