Its been a while since we got any new music from the Mike Patton universe.

But in his absence from the public eye makes the presence of Sturle Dagsland all the more welcoming. Especially when you consider how this genre-defying artist from Norway approaches his music.

Alongside his brother, Sjur, Dagsland conjures up a sound that pulls together elements of avant-garde pop, screaming metal, folk music and immersive electronic soundscapes in a way that MOJO Magazine calls “simultaneously beautiful, terrifying and exhilarating” in regards to his self-titled first album from 2021. “It feels closer to sorcery than songwriting.”

On Oct. 10, Dagsland will be releasing his second album, Dreams and Conjurations, sharing the first single, “Galdring,” with music fans this week.

“‘Galdring’ takes a lot of inspiration from both the old Norse rituals and the Sapmi shamanistic traditions,” Sturle explains of the song’s premise. “The first initial ideas came from the symbiosis I experienced while spending time in a sled dog village in Greenland. Through experimentation with different vocalization techniques, I experienced a level of harmony with the animals and achieved a synergy where it felt as if conducting a whole village of 200 wolf dogs, singing along with them and being a part of the same subconscious. I achieved almost an alpha-like-status in the pack — when I stopped singing — they stopped. I was the conductor and they were my orchestra. This was a magical moment for us and we tried to bring this existential and intense feeling into ‘Galdring,’ which was created using ceremonial Sámi drums, wooden logs, bones, harps, cow horns and a wide array of different folk instruments.”
