Morgan James: A New Soul Sister
Championing one of today’s best song interpreters
It seems like just yesterday I was sitting in Toad’s Place, the dark bar and theater in New Haven, Connecticut, which once hosted a secret Rolling Stones concert in 1989.
That day, I was listening to a performance by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. They are a great concept ensemble, but the only reason I was there was about to come on stage.
From the moment Morgan James — her body shaking, eyes clenched tightly, and lips crying out “Take Me to Church” — began to sing, her piercing voice stole my heart. I fell deeply in love. She mesmerized me. Like a force of nature, her voice filled every cubic inch of the building with raw emotion. She inhabited each note, every word, making each song her story.
Hearing Morgan James immersed in the “flow,” intensely focused and pouring out her soul, I was close to losing self-consciousness. She took me into the music, merging with it, obscuring any awareness of where I was.
Before that night, I had only heard her singing online. That’s what compelled me to drive hours across the state — to hear her live in concert. Hearing that voice on stage, effortlessly punching out the highest notes in her lead during “All About That Bass,” then feeling the depth of her pain during the solo of “Take Me to Church,” reminded me of the authenticity of Nina Simone. Morgan James has often cited Nina Simone as a significant influence on her music and artistry. Hearing Simone’s powerful voice and witnessing her ability to convey deep emotion through song inspired James to embrace her own vocal prowess and explore themes of authenticity and social justice in her work.

I later found out that Morgan’s path to the stage started well before any spotlights were involved. She grew up in Boise, Idaho, in a home where serious music was part of everyday life. Her father played classical bass, and her mother sang opera. Despite originally considering a career as a veterinarian, it’s no surprise that her love for the arts prevailed. Performing in local theater from a young age, she began developing her voice. Eventually, she was accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York.
At Juilliard, she initially studied classical voice. But not being content with a single path, she was also drawn to the soulful sounds of R&B, jazz, and gospel. There, she was able to delve into her deep-rooted love for legendary musical divas Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. Their blending of power with vulnerability influenced the vocal style she was crafting — her own truly original sound of soul.
She moves effortlessly between genres, from her deeply passionate renditions of classic R&B hits (like Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” Prince’s “Call My Name” and Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”) to dynamic performances on Broadway in Motown: The Musical, Godspell and The Addams Family. There is a depth to Morgan’s interpretations. She makes each word of every song her own, imbuing the stories told by the lyrics with heartfelt spirit — no matter the style.
One of the most striking aspects of Morgan James’s artistry is her theatrical background. Her classical training and her experience in musical theater provide her with a deep understanding of how to use voice to tell a story. She is a master of dynamics, able to move from a whisper to a roar with effortless grace. And her stage presence is magnetic, drawing members of the audience — like myself — into her world.

And that is exactly what Morgan James has done. She has built a career on her own terms and continues to do so with grace and authenticity.
Morgan James connects easily with the past, making songs written decades ago sound as fresh and relevant as if they were written today. This ability to bridge the gap between generations is a testament to her artistry and her deep understanding of the power of music. For example, take her tribute versions of Joni Mitchell’s Blue and The Beatles’ White Album. Her interpretation of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is introspective, focusing on the sorrow in the lyrics and emphasizing emotion in her voice — 0compared to the original blues-rock ballad style. Morgan’s respect for Blue shows in a more powerful, soulful, and classically controlled style than the ethereal, fragile, and deeply personal originals by Mitchell.
Morgan James is not just a singer. She is an artist who is constantly evolving, pushing boundaries, and striving to connect with her audience on deeper levels. She is a force to be reckoned with, and I have no doubt she will continue to make her mark on the world of music for many years to come.
Morgan James IS Thunderstruck
Morgan James showcases her remarkable vocal versatility in an impressively moving adaptation of AC/DC’s rock anthem, “Thunderstruck.”
Digging into the essential meaning of “Thunderstruck,” the song, Morgan James pares it down and rebuilds it with emotion and nuance. She draws out what has been hiding inside the stadium-raising call to arms. Instead, she delivers an introspective, personal interpretation. Producing an explosive new addition to the library of soul.
