Freda Love Smith In Conversation at The Book House
The former Blake Babies drummer will be in Millburn, NJ, to promote her new book I Quit Everything

Imagine waking up and not enjoying that first cup of coffee in the morning?
Now imagine eschewing all of the addictive vices and behaviors from your life as a means of exploring an existence without them. This is the crux of I Quit Everything: How One Woman’s Addiction to Quitting Helped Her Confront Bad Habits and Embrace Midlife, the new book from former Blake Babies drummer Freda Love Smith, who will be appearing tomorrow at The Book House in Millburn, NJ, for a conversation with the great Ira Robbins of Trouser Press.
The book, Smith’s second following her 2015 recipe memoir Red Velvet Underground, follows the author’s experimental journey into a straightedge lifestyle following the events of January 6, 2021 when rioters stormed the United States Capitol. Freda’s initial reaction to the horror was the need for a drink but rationalized that it wouldn’t solve her internal strife. Nor would her cups of tea or nightly weed gummy.
So she began removing one addictive behavior from her life each month, chronicling her withdrawals from alcohol, sugar, caffeine, cannabis, and social media while offering witty observations on personal experiences and norms that informed her life.

“As Smith analyzes our hyperconnected culture that leads to bad habits, she offers wry wisdom that is both provocative and timely,” raves Kirkus Reviews, who calls the book “a humorous, insightful memoir of self-improvement.”
And when intertwined with her remarkable career as a member of one of Boston’s best alt-rock acts, the conversation between Smith and Robbins on Tuesday night will be one not to miss.
Pick up I Quit Everything: How One Woman’s Addiction to Quitting Helped Her Confront Bad Habits and Embrace Midlife here.
Or better yet, come on down to The Book House if you’re in the New Jersey area this October 17th and with luck Smith will sign your copy upon purchase.
The event begins at 6 PM.
