The Ocean Blue To Reissue 1999’s Davy Jones’ Locker

Few American bands have perfected the shimmer of classic Britpop/Dream Pop like The Ocean Blue out of Hershey, PA.

And on August 25th, the group–who formed as teenagers in 1986–will be reissuing one of their finest and most underrated albums in 1999’s Davy Jones’ Locker via Korda Records.

Upon its initial release, Davy marked the first time The Ocean Blue had appeared on an indie label, as their first three LPs were famously released on Sire Records with their fourth, Go See The Ocean Blue, coming out on PolyGram in 1996. So following their departure from the big leagues, the group opted to self-release Davy Jones’ Locker in ’99, which was then picked up, resequenced and remastered by March Records. This latest reissue from Korda, however, will mark the first time its being made available on vinyl.

“On the reissue, we wanted to revisit this album this year, as it was basically out of print and never released on vinyl,” explains frontman and chief songwriter David Schelzel. “As we did this, we realized there were a lot of interesting things going on that record and at that time for the band in terms of recording, songwriting, and trying out different approaches in our own studio. We also thought the album might benefit from some light remastering, which was needed for vinyl anyways, and were really pleased with the results. We’re looking forward to playing some of the songs from this record on tour this fall.”

Prefacing the reissue of Davy Jones’ Locker is a new video for the album’s marquee single “Denmark,” which Rock & Roll Globe is happy to share with readers today on the site.

“As for the video, director Zeke Anders approached us about doing a video,” Schelzel explains. “We’d gotten to know Zeke more as a photographer who had shot some of our shows in recent years. Just incredible photos, and Zeke is a really nice and thoughtful guy, who understands the band and our music well. As we talked with him about our plans, the idea emerged to do a video of Denmark. It was a bit of a strange project because it was for a song that had already been out there for a long time. But somewhat conveniently, that fits right into what the song is about in terms of looking back at the past, to the present and the future of the band. Zeke did such an artful job of capturing all that in his treatment and execution, along with the themes of the song. And he assembled an amazing team to make it. We’re really fortunate to have the video, and it’s gotten a tremendous response from fans since its release.”

The Ocean Blue hits the road in support of the reissue of Davy Jones’ Locker this fall, kicking things off in late summer on September 1 at Shank Hall in Milwaukee, WI, and wrapping up on November 18th at Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, AZ.
