The Claypool-Lennon Delirium Hit the Beach

Regardless of what side of the political fence you live on, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the mob mentality of like-minded folks dogpiling on a celebrity for doing something that goes against their cultural beliefs.

I have to admit, I am no saint when it comes to this as well, quick to cut a beloved music artist or actor loose because they became MAGA or whatever.

I did this to Sean Ono Lennon, someone who I have been a fan of since Cibo Matto and have interviewed several times in the course of my years as a music journalist. He is someone I consider one of my most cherished interviews as well, because of my family’s connections to The Beatles through my mom’s fandom, which saw her go to JFK to watch the Fabs get off the plane and Shea Stadium as well. She would have been so proud of me for connecting with Sean on this level, I’m sure of it.

But despite this connection, I found myself caught up on Facebook amidst complaints about Sean being a fan of Elon Musk, who I have never hid my contempt for as an American oligarch of the cruelest order. Turns out, however, I was fed bad information and ran with it, even going as far as to call him out as some kinda Elon acolyte online myself (which I have since taken down at the request of a wise old friend).

If you have any doubts of Sean’s stance on Elon Musk, look no further than the brilliant third album from The Claypool-Lennon Delirium — The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy. It’s a concept piece about what happens when artificial intelligence runs amok, leaving our planet awash in paper clips because AI couldn’t stop itself from making them. There’s an incredible comic book that is included inside the vinyl or CD (in lieu of liner notes) that illustrates the tale with a Crumb-kissed absurdity that utilizes the lyrics to songs like “WAP (What a Predicament),” “Troll Bait” and “Cliptopia” into character dialogue. I can see an animated special in the future.

It’s not only the best thing Lennon and Primus bassist Les Claypool have done together since uniting 11 years ago, it’s one of the smartest and most prophetic concept albums to emerge from the rock idiom since Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime, whose lessons we are still experiencing to this day. The evils of AI and those who wish to clamp down on citizens while wielding its power, like Musk and Peter Thiel, are undoubtedly trounced in this sonic narrative.

The Claypool-Lennon Delirium is now taking Parrot-Ox on the road as part of the Claypool Gold tour, a summer trek featuring not only the CLD but Primus and Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade as well. They are coming to Asbury Park, New Jersey, on June 13 and Rock & Roll Globe will be there to experience it. Coincidentally, the last time we were in Asbury Park was to see Primus a few years back, so it will be a most welcome return.

It will be quite a spectacular Saturday in June as Claypool fans gather to the Stone Pony Summer Stage to see this trifecta of talent impress and astound their ever-aging fanbase in the warmth of the South Jersey sun.
