Portland, Oregon’s premier Chicano rocker, Joshua Josué, will be releasing his full-length debut recording — Beneath the Sand — later this summer.

During a period of our nation’s history where the current presidential administration is targeting brown people, its artists like Josué who remind American music fans about the importance of Latinos in the fabric of rock ‘n’ roll from Ritchie Valens to Los Lobos.

Written along the open roads of Mexico and Central America and recorded in the Mojave Desert, Beneath the Sand features an impressive lineup of guests sitting in to craft Josué’s vision, including Roly Salley (GRAMMY-winning writer, The Chris Isaak Band), Mitch Marine (Dwight Yoakam’s band), Hershel Yatovitz (Chris Isaak’s band), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Joel Guzmán (Los Super Seven) and Murry Hammond (The Old 97’s).

For Joshua, the desert landscape surrounding the solar-powered Goat Mountain Recording Studio helped shape the album’s sound.

“This was the perfect studio for this album,” Joshua said. “The studio itself embodies the themes of this album…You can sit on a bench outside, drinking a cup of coffee while recording a guitar part as roadrunners and jackrabbits watch. It’s the kind of place where you can be part of the landscape.”

But while Beneath the Sand is still a bit under a month away from release, Rock & Roll Globe is happy to premiere one of the album’s best songs today on the site: the Tex-Mex rocker “Bogart & Me,” which is about the singer’s beloved black mouth cur dog and their trip to record the album together.

“‘Bogart & Me’ is the story of heading out to make this record,” he says. “I felt like I was on the adventure of a lifetime…driving through the desert to record with my musical heroes. Sometimes when you step out into the unknown…it can be a bit scary and isolating. But I had Bogart with me on this journey. Ever loving and supportive, this song is for him — and this adventure.”

Beneath the Sand will be out Aug. 8 on Electric CholoLand Records.
