Two years after the release of their debut Existing the Dream, Los Angeles-based indie band Low Coast have released the album’s poignant single “Sandy.”

Only this new version of the song — subtitled “The Next One” — has been slowed down from the more buoyant original as a means to address its somber lyrics, which tackles quite possibly the most horrific and devastating mass shooting in American history.

“Thirteen years ago, 20 children and 6 adults were murdered in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut,” the band explains in a written statement about the song. “While the world looked on in horror at this tragedy, our governing body struggled to act. Every year since, thousands more have died due to senseless gun violence. Still our leaders do nothing.

“After decades of inaction, ‘Sandy’ is one side of an imagined conversation with a member of Congress. While not being blamed for these recurring tragedies, we are simply asking this Congressperson to do the bare minimum and try.

“…she was just a kid with the world coming into view. It was never what you did, it was what you didn’t do. Don’t matter what you done, just be better with the next one…”

“The original version on our album, Existing The Dream, is a bouncy rock song. We thought it would be clever to balance the bleakness of the lyrics with a more upbeat and almost hopeful delivery. However, when it came to playing the song live we started to feel like the message was being lost in that delivery.

“On ‘Sandy (The Next One)’ we lean into the disillusionment and pain of the lyrics. With more patience in the production, our aim is to allow the listener to meditate a bit more on the weight of this tragedy before an eruption of rage breaks the tension and pulls focus back to the distorted reality of this distinctly American issue.”

Really influential band people can’t really understand the magnitude of this.
