Dave Davies Disavows New Kinks Book
Guitarist calls out tome for ‘misinformation’

Dave Davies is not a happy camper about a new book on The Kinks that was just released to the public.
The tome in question, All Day and All of the Night – The Day-By-Day Story Pt 1: 1940-1971, by Doug Hinman and Andrew Sandoval, was published with “misinformation” that was discovered by Dave once he began reading the copy he had received, which was after he had signed numerous copies of the book for a promo campaign.
“I cannot endorse the new Kinks book by Doug Hinman and Andrew Sandoval because there’s misinformation in it about our early recording sessions,” Davies said via X. “I signed some copies for charity before I had read the errors.”
Later that evening, he admitted what was really bothering him about the book.
“All those fukin years ago why don’t they leave me alone? That little bit of rhythm guitar on ‘All day and All [of] the Night’ is Ray. Jimmy Page did not play rhythm guitar on All day and All [of] the Night.’”
Then he added, “And Jimmy Page did not put distortion on ‘I Need You’ either. Fukin hell.”

Davies did acknowledge the legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist’s involvement in some of The Kinks’ early recordings, particularly playing 12-string acoustic guitar on the 1964 single “I’m a Lover Not a Fighter” and the deep cut “I’ve Been Driving on Bald Mountain,” which can be found on the deluxe edition of the band’s eponymous debut.
Davies also praised the book in a later tweet and expressed hope that the mistakes would be corrected in the next printing.
“It’s a beautiful book full of lovely photographs and I’ve known Andrew and Doug for years” he wrote on X. “I just wish they had checked with me first and not printed a rumor as fact.”
All Day and All of the Night – The Day-By-Day Story was first published in 2004, written solely by Hinman. This new edition from Beatland Books expands it to three volumes, the first of which was published this past February and contains 520 pages.

“Hinman has teamed with fellow Kinks reissue kompiler, Andrew Sandoval, to expand the contents and dig even deeper to document the group’s creative journey,” the publisher said in a press release.“You can expect to find details of heretofore unknown songs, canceled concerts and detailed contemporary reviews from dozens of primary international sources.”
Sandoval, who was once a musician in Dave’s solo band, had invested $100,000 in the revamped book with Hinman. The first volume is on sale in three variants at $100, $200 and $350 respectively. The second and third volumes are not yet available.
Neither Hinman nor Sandoval have made a public comment at press time.
