The COVID pandemic might have been harrowing for otherwise healthy people, but it was doubly as fraught for those with an autoimmune disease.

Luckily for Christopher Pappas–the artist behind California indie pop act Elle Belle–COVID might not have been in the cards for him. But unfortunately, a series of events would shake his world, including a cancer scare, his mother suffering a heart attack (she’s since fully recovered) and the loss of a dear friend to suicide.

How Do I Feel?, Pappas’s new album under the Elle Belle handle, is a conduit to those feelings of fear and loss he was experiencing as a means of coping with this emotional tsunami. It comes out on September 1 on Little Record Company, a label run by Rilo Kiley’s Pierre de Reeder.

Recorded at de Reeder’s 64 Sound Studios in Highland Park, Pappas says this might be his last album, mulling over the idea of strictly releasing singles–a process more in line with the way by which he creates. But if How Do I Feel? is indeed his swan song as an album artist, he’s leaving it all on the table here.

“By making this record,” he says, “what I did was I readjusted the real questions I should be asking myself. It doesn’t matter how I feel. What you need to remember is that people go through shit, but you can do this. That became the main takeaway. How do I feel? Fuck if I know. But you know what? I’m going to wake up tomorrow. And there’s power in just being like, no matter what you get up, you make the bed, go get your coffee and you keep going.”

Rock & Roll Globe is honored to premiere the album’s first single, the Postal Service-esque “Gone Are The Days,” today on the site.

“‘Gone are the Days,’ with its nostalgic lyrics with upbeat backdrop, offers listeners a heartfelt journey through time with humor and infectious energy,” Pappas explains of the tune. “The song is about the world we inherited from our parents and how we were set up to fail. It’s about disillusionment, war and getting older.”
