LISTEN: Jesus Waits For Johnny Ray Daniels
We are proud to premiere the new single off the 76-year-old Sacred Soul vet’s long-awaited solo debut

Soul Music at the bedrock of Rock and Roll Globe’s editorial mission.
And that’s why we are beyond thrilled to premiere new music from North Carolina sacred soul singer Johnny Ray Daniels today on the site.
At 76, Mr. Daniels is poised to release his solo debut Whatever You Need on May 6th via Bruce Watson’s Bible & Tire Recording Company imprint–one of the great safe spaces for American Sacred Soul in the 21st century.
Produced by Watson in Memphis, TN, the album also featured Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Al Green) and Will Sexton on guitars (Charlie Sexton, Alejandro Escovedo, Roky Erickson).

Having grown up in an area with the highest concentration of KKK in the nation, Daniels would overcome the odds upon his dedication to the church, where he honed his sacred soul singing, playing on bills with gospel legends like Shirley Caesar, Sam Cooke, and the Blind Boys of Alabama while on tour as a member of The Glorifying Vines.
His spirit comes through all over Whatever You Need, from the easy-going “I Shall Not Be Moved” to the hopeful title cut to the Hi Records-channeling “God Is Able” and especially on “Jesus Is Waiting,” which comes out as a single timorrow, and shares his experience of being in a serious car accident.
“My kidneys were bleeding,” Daniels explains about the song’s context. “The doctor told me they were going to have to take it out. I prayed to Jesus. A couple of days later, the doctor said, ‘a miracle done happened. Your kidney stopped bleeding.’ I just wanted to tell that testimony.”
