LISTEN: Upright Forms Shares First Single “Heaven Knows”
Blurred Wires, the debut album from the Minneapolis power trio, out on June 28th via SKiN GRAFT Records
Longtime SKiN GRAFT Records artist Nick Sakes (Dazzling Killmen, Colossamite, Sicbay) is back with a killer new power trio in Upright Forms.
Working alongside bassist Noah Paster and drummer Shaun Westphal, the group’s debut LP Blurred Wires feels like a summation of Sakes’s near 35-year-old creative output – 10 songs that combine solid hooks and nimble dynamics with elements of tension, dissonance and experimentation that mark much of his back catalog.
The chemistry by which Sakes connects with his new foils helps Upright Forms succeed in crafting tunes that pull from such disparate influences as Superdrag (“Long Shadow”), Television Personalities (“Animositine”), which Sakes hails as “our prettiest song,” and the Minutemen (“Biology of Time”).
Blurred Wires doesn’t come out until June 28th, but Rock & Roll Globe is proud to share the album’s first single, the album’s explosive opening cut “Heaven Knows,” today on the site.
“This anthem came about by sewing together pieces and parts delivered to us from the ether over time via the usual sonic receptors. Frankenstein stuff,” Sakes tells us about the song. “The first two sections combine the subject’s frustration with understanding the Universal Force while juxtaposing life’s inevitable ‘evils.’ Nothing is resolved. At last, all is released to nature and the helpless limitations of our human bodily composition – static electricity, water, decay. The expression of the subject’s final scream ends the progression as the car flies off the cliff! BURY THE SOUND! Make. it. stop. Heaven Knows we can’t.”
