LISTEN: The Starvations Return with Reissue Campaign
Classic 2003 LP, Get Well Soon, out Jan. 10
For ten short years, L.A.’s The Starvations were a band that Pitchfork once hailed as the “bastard scion” of The Birthday Party and the Misfits.
Now, two decades after their split in 2005, the band who formed in 1995 out of working class Orange County has announced a series of reissues from their underrated back catalog, starting with the updated remaster of their 2003 breakout LP Get Well Soon.
Originally released on the Gold Standard Labs imprint (Mars Volta, The Locust), the album will be available on Jan. 10 through Permanent Teeth Records, allowing those who missed out on this crucial group the first time an opportunity to get straight with these children of The Gun Club.

“Having lost a number of our friends during our earliest years, the specter of death hung imposingly over The Starvations and we often tried processing this sense of loss through our lyrics and atmosphere of the music,” Starvations frontman Gabriel Hart explains of the song. “It was reluctant inspiration; either a way to immortalize the dead or be defiant in the face of mortality. It wasn’t until I read Jessica Mitford’s venomous critique on our exploitive funeral industry The American Way of Death (1963), when I began to make small sense of the accumulated anger I felt sending off our dead as Americans specifically, how every funeral we attended seemed to add psychic insult to mortal injury, largely due to the hypocrisy inherent in our country. Finally able to contextualize this insidiousness, I wrote ‘An American Funeral’ largely inspired by the book, though its poetic value remains demurred by a middle finger withstanding.”
