West Michigan Americana rock duo Wayland utilizes the landscape of Joshua Tree, CA, as the backdrop to the poignant video for their new single “Drive Away.”

The song, a true highlight from the pair’s latest album On The Way, was written by lead guitarist Phillip Vilenski and lead vocalist Mitch Arnold and stems from their response to an article they had read online about a recent lynching in Indiana.

The profound sadness and frustration at such ongoing injustices fueled the creation of this evocative song. “Drive Away” was crafted in the serene landscapes of Joshua Tree, California, within the confines of Wayland’s own home studio, where Phillip Vilenski also took on the role of producer, infusing the track with raw authenticity and heartfelt sentiment.

“We started writing this song the very first day we moved into our Joshua Tree house and studio,” explains Vilenski. “Reading that article online shocked and saddened us. Writing this song and filming this video hopefully brings some awareness to the fact that we all have an opportunity to recognize right and wrong no matter how a person was raised.”

As a rallying cry against the cycle of hate and division, “Drive Away” is a song that calls out for hope and change by din of electric guitars and impassioned vocals in the spirit of The Black Crowes and Drive-By Truckers.

“You don’t have to live that way,” they sing on the tune’s infectious bridge. “The world’s going nowhere with hate / It’s not a county line, just an open highway / There’s no reason to be afraid / Just let yourself drive away.”

Named after the town they emerged from, Wayland recently hosted a hometown release show on Saturday March 16th at Gun Lake Casino in Wayland, Michigan. They are currently in the planning stages of a tour in support of On The Way. Visit the group’s official website for upcoming dates.
