LISTEN: Twilark Shares New LP ‘The Taming Ties Create’
Listen to the full album from rising Raleigh, NC songwriter

Twilark is the songwriting project of Raleigh, North Carolina’s Canon Pence, who crafts a storm of Southern Gothic folk that fans of Lambchop and the Pernice Brothers will want to check out.
His debut album, The Taming Ties Create, undoubtedly smacks of the melancholy twang and nuanced jangle that’s been North Carolina’s sonic bread and butter for nearly 50 years… albeit with a more torrid edge and intimate storytelling.
“The songs on the album represent a myriad of my influences, from traditional alt-country, melancholy indie and dark post-punk,” Pence tells Rock & Roll Globe. “But I think the kernel of authentic emotionally intimate songwriting connects them. Recording this album was a wonderful and eye-opening experience, and I look forward to more.”
The Taming Ties Create was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville with Zac Little (Saintseneca) and Dominic Billett (Julia Jacklin, Steve Gunn), with pedal steel contributions from Spencer Cullum. It was tracked over nine days with no pre-production, giving the album the natural feel of an old studio couch.

For Pence, the collaborative process gave him a sense of comfort that allowed him to really open up in terms of a willingness to share his songs with the world.
“For many years, songwriting was an exclusively personal thing for me,” he explains. “A kind of meditation therapy with no consideration of sharing. But then, over the years, I started to love these little songs as an art in themselves. My relationship gradually changed to the point that I began to consider some kind of public release. Being a complete novice, I knew I had to work with folks with experience.
“For this first album, I was fortunate to be able to work with two of my favorite musicians. Zac Little, the producer, has been one of my favorite currently active musicians with his band Saintseneca, and I also loved the Superviolet album he produced. And Dominic Billett, whose album Two Peach Trees was my favorite album of that year, filled out the rest of the team.”
