WATCH: Dallas’ julian maas Releases ‘Did You Ever Think?’
Debut LP, Cherry, out Oct. 17

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer julian maas has released his latest single, “Did You Ever Think?,” a highlight from his debut album Cherry, which comes out on Oct. 17.
During the writing of Cherry, the 21-year-old Dallas native looked to his album collection for the DNA of these songs, including music from the likes of Helmet, Pinback, The Lilys, Placebo, Sneaker Pimps, Veruca Salt, Crystal Method and Supercar.
With “Did You Ever Think?” however, maas delves into the sounds of the 2010s when acts like Deerhunter and MGMT were breaking new ground with lo-fi swagger.
“This is one of those types of songs that actually felt super fluent throughout the whole process,” he explains. “It’s not a complex song at the ground level but the difficulty was figuring out how to elevate it. I remember I had the demo for it, (which was literally just drums, the moog and vocals,) and I just built more and more onto it as I went. It’s a very powerful song in context of the record, and honestly I’m happy it’s a single, but at the same time it’s really one I made FOR the album. Maybe it’ll give people a different meaning for each listen. It’s weird listening to it on its own as the two tracks that are before and after it, really finish out the song and reflect more, but hey I could say that about any of the songs.”

For maas, “Did You Ever Think?” — whose accompanying video you can watch below — captures feelings he’s been wrestling with in the wake of the COVID pandemic.
“I never like to give too much detail on what I believe my songs to mean, partly because I’m still learning years after they’re written, and also I love leaving the listener some space to really relate to it in their OWN way,” he explains. “But I will say this song really did encapsulate the feeling of being alone, just in any sense; it’s a song about watching things pass while you spend your time alone, at least to me that’s what it means. I almost didn’t use this song for Cherry; there was a point where there weren’t any guitars on it at all, and I was just thinking ‘this isn’t a Cherry song if it doesn’t have a shit ton of guitars,’ but then it ended up being the missing piece that glues the whole song together at the end.”
With Cherry released later this fall, maas continues to gather sounds, ideas, and stories for what comes next, remaining an artist defined not by a single sound but by a restless pursuit of honesty, exploration and connection through music.
