LISTEN: Josh Evert Shares ‘The Sound of Machines’
New LP, Photogenic Memory, out Sept. 18
Milwaukee-based audio engineer, songwriter, composer and producer Josh Evert is sharing the new single from his forthcoming album, Photogenic Memory.
The concept of “The Sound of Machines” sees Evert bringing a widescreen pop approach to his experimental ambitions in the studio, owing a debt to both The Flaming Lips and Fountains of Wayne in equal measure.
“The first line of ‘The Sound of Machines’ is literally about being woken up by construction equipment,” he tells Rock & Roll Globe. “Then realizing that I have no idea what this equipment, nor the people wielding it, could possibly be doing. This serves as the metaphor for the larger ‘machine,’ and the difficulties in raging against it without understanding it. It seems impossible without money, but of course it isn’t. So the song is riding the fence, helplessness on one side, pragmatism on the other.”
Recorded at Silver City Studios, an artist-run, affordable recording space he co-owns, the album features contributions from such fellow Wisconsin artists as Mol Sullivan, Emma Witmer, Barry Paul Clark, Rob Weiss, D’Amato (Beauty Steps), Ryan Thomas Reeve, Will Hansen, Sean Behling and Andy Kosanke. Their collective presence here is a testament to the space Evert and his cohorts have established.
And Photogenic Memory, with its explorations into how personal and collective histories are shaped by time, holds the promise of an exciting new scene on the come-up here in the United States.
Photogenic Memory comes out on Sept. 18.
