Bob Dylan to Release 1974 Tour Box
New 431-track collection of the artist’s arena trek with The Band to be released on September 20

Legacy Recordings, the catalog arm of Sony Music, embarks upon a bold new era in their Bob Dylan archive series with Bob Dylan and The Band – The 1974 Live Recordings.
Scheduled for release on September 20th, the 27-CD deluxe box set commemorates the 50th anniversary of Bob’s return to touring in 1974. The collection includes 417 previously unreleased live tracks – including 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape, and every single surviving soundboard recording – along with new liner notes by journalist and critic Elizabeth Nelson, who also fronts the band The Paranoid Style.
In conjunction with The 1974 Live Recordings, Jack White’s Third Man Records has announced the September release of The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before the Flood. It’s a 3-LP / 1 x 7-inch set culled from the same recordings, featuring selected versions of every song Bob Dylan recorded that wasn’t included on the original 1974 live album. Pressed exclusively on colored vinyl, the set will be available through The Vault, Third Man’s direct-to-customer mail order service.

Look for the full tracklist below and catch a taste of The 1974 Live Recordings with a previously unreleased performance of “Forever Young,” live in Seattle, Feb 9, 1974 (afternoon show).
Dylan’s tour of 1974 with The Band was the first time the Bard hit the road since his last outing with the group formerly known as The Hawks in 1966, a tour that was given the box set treatment back in 2016. It saw Dylan booking arenas for the first time ever, performing 30 dates in 42 days, two sets per day, to audiences of 18,000 fans or more. It was in these big rooms, with The Band behind him, where Dylan’s songs took flight and became some of the rock staples they are today.
What’s cool about this ‘74 box is the realization that Dylan and The Band never stuck to a steady setlist with the exception of tour staples like “All Along the Watchtower” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” So in perusing the tracklist, it will be a treat for Dylan fans to see the inclusion of such rarities as an electric version of “Hero Blues” from the The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions, reinvented renditions of other early Bob staples like “Ballad of Hollis Brown” and “Song for Woody” – not played live since 1962 at the time – and “Nobody ‘Cept You,” an outtake from Planet Waves, which Dylan was touring to support alongside his collaborators.
At the outset, the 1974 Tour was captured on a stereo soundboard mix, on both 1⁄4” tape and cassette. By tour’s end, Asylum Records’ David Geffen had commissioned recordings on multitrack tape, the standard at the time, for eventual release on Before the Flood. The 1974 Live Recordings includes it all – the cassettes and 1⁄4” tapes, and the shows that were recorded on 16-track tape, newly-mixed for this collection.
It’s said this tour set the standard for arena rock. This box set is our road map to how it got there. Cannot wait.
