The second generation duo’s debut album, Right Before Your Eyes, comes out on 9/23
The sons of two music industry greats have come together as Alain Zane to turn up the heat on the Los Angeles R&B/soul scene.
The group is comprised of Cat Colbert, whose father Charles Colbert played bass for everyone from Harry Belafonte to Kurtis Blow in addition to his own work as a member of the American Breed, and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Browne, who calls legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne his dad. Both young men were immersed in music at a young age. Browne’s obsession with crate digging led him to become a DJ and producer, while Colbert’s captivating singing voice landed him an early deal with Quincy Jones’s Qwest Record.
So no doubt it’s been quite a treat seeing where this pair have been going sonically since uniting to form Alain Zane (the combination of their middle names). And Rock & Roll Globe is honored to premiere the next single from their forthcoming LP Right Before Your Eyes today on the site.
Entitled “CA State Of Mind,” the track begins with a lament about Los Angeles traffic before giving a wink to The Eagles’ “Hotel California” as multi-layered harmonies split the difference between The Beach Boys and The Delfonics.
“This is a love song for California. It’s about how Cali is a mindset that defies and overcomes the challenges and struggles of everyday life,” says Ethan Browne. “CA is more than a place. It is a feeling and way of life and whether yours is easy or hard, it’s all good if you are in that Golden State of mind.”
Recorded, assembled, and in some cases dramatically reimagined by Browne, Right Before Your Eyes is sleek and groove-driven balance of old school R&B and new school groove theory that should have such local imprints as Stones Throw and Brainfeeder take notice. It comes out on September 23rd on the Spinside Records imprint.
