LISTEN: Asa Daniels Goes Solo With “Historical Christ”
Debut LP from Gooseberry guitarist and frontman out in the fall

You may have heard the name Asa Daniels from his role as frontman / guitarist for the prominent NYC alt-rock trio Gooseberry.
Or perhaps you might’ve seen him perform in his old high school/college era funk group Baked Goods, a band mentored by none other than legendary Billy Joel saxophonist Richie Cannata.
Now, Daniels tests his mettle under his own name with the upcoming release of his debut solo LP, I’ve Run Out of Boxes to Put Things In. Here, the twentysomething-year-old singer lets his inner creative core have free reign. From hook laden folk-pop to thick jazz-flecked funk rock to Bluesy squall and thundering drums, he lets loose with a pair of esteemed collaborators in Grammy winning producer / engineer James Meslin (Dream Theater, Rush) and Grammy-nominated engineer Colin Bryson (Zach Bryan).
Rock & Roll Globe is proud to premiere the first single from I’ve Run Out of Boxes to Put Things In, the propulsive “Historical Christ,” a song that he calls “an ode to one of my favorite Wikipedia pages.”

“Inspired by the greatest story ever told, but this song isn’t about that guy, but rather that other unsavory character,” Daniels explains. “We learn throughout the song that we’re dealing not with a righteous character, but one who has been around the block once or twice and is eager to lie, cheat, take advantage, and deceive his way to power. Under the surface, this song has probably less to do with religion (though I certainly find myself volleying religious ideals around all the time in my lyrics, even if I don’t consider myself a religious person) and more to do with the follower culture that is so pervasive in today’s world. Everything—art, business, food, whatever—has been commoditized to hell and gone.
“The business model of all major platforms incentivizes a main figure constantly producing content (particularly, incendiary content) so that they can maintain their followers’ interest,” he continues. “Everyone knows the game is the game, and yet because everyone accepts that nothing is genuine anymore, we move further and further from anything real. And I suppose I’m saying that in a world like that, it’s this character, not Christ or any other, that has won out. Musically, this song is effectively an homage to arguably my favorite artist of all time, Chris Cornell. While I’ll never match his pipes, if I can channel even an iota of his work in mine, that’s a win in my book.”
I’ve Run Out of Boxes to Put Things In might not come out until September, but you can listen to “Historical Christ” below.
