Shane Patrick Cronin might not make the same kind of music as his rock star dad, REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin.

But the sound he crafts under the moniker Whisker proves the apple certainly hasn’t fallen far from the proverbial tree in terms of creating music that connects with its audience.

Inspired by the modern psychedelic netherworld manifested by the likes of Tame Impala, Djo and Phoebe Bridgers, the young Cronin combines these influences with his inherent classic rock DNA to craft his upcoming debut album Can’t You Feel It?.

Out Oct. 30, Can’t You Feel It? is a record about family, memory and the relationships that shape us.

“These songs are conversations that would otherwise remain unspoken, between myself and former partners, family members, and past and future versions of myself,” Cronin reflects.

One particular tune, “Bus Stop,” reflects on the separation anxiety he felt with a dad on the road all the time.

“Growing up as the son of a touring musician, my dad was absent for eight months out of the year. The financial security he provided came with a lack of closeness, which was difficult to deal with,” Shane explains.

On the other hand, Shane channels the sleek ‘80s pop-rock melodies of REO to deliver a cautionary tale of dating while famous on the album’s first single “Marry Into Money,” the video of which can be seen below.

“‘Marry Into Money’ is inspired by a conversation with my ex-girlfriend,” Shane explains. “I’ll spare the details, but I’m sure you can tell how that conversation went! It was the perfect fuel for an ’80s inspired music video: an epic faceoff between myself and a gold digger.”

The result is a high-energy track that sounds like a lost song from The Karate Kid soundtrack, though the remainder of the album is more along the lines of Phoebe and The War on Drugs than Survivor or Joe “Bean” Esposito.

“‘Marry Into Money’ was my way of scratching my 80’s rock itch. My guilty pleasures are Foreigner, Journey, Def Leppard, among other epic ‘80s bands,” Shane says. “I thought to myself, I’ve never made a proper rock and roll song! So, my longtime friend and epic guitarist Marshall Via and I turned up the amps to 11, and ‘Marry Into Money’ came to life.”
