With less than two weeks left until Christmas, animal lovers turn their attention to the heartbreaking levels of overpopulation in our country’s animal shelters.

“Partly Cloudy Dog,” the latest single from pioneering transgender artist Lenny Zenith, emphasizes the necessity of people to choose adoption over purchase, set to an electric current of solemn emotion.

The song, taken from Zenith’s latest album, He/Hymn, doubles down on these noble sentiments by taking a portion of any funds accrued from streams, downloads and purchase of the tune will go to benefit Villalobos Pitbull Rescue in the singer’s city of New Orleans.

Here’s what he tells us about the tune and the historical importance they hold in his life:

“Dogs have always been a central part of my life. One of our earliest family pets was Coco, a scruffy mutt with wiry hair and a white muzzle. I loved Coco for his calm demeanor and soulful eyes. Then there was my grandfather’s dog, Poopie, a spirited and mischievous mixed breed who brought energy to every moment.

“When my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I moved into our first apartment, we adopted Roxy, a Catahoula (Louisiana’s state dog). Roxy was a whirlwind of energy as a puppy. I’ll never forget one night when we were sleeping on our waterbed (yes, a waterbed!) and I woke to the unmistakable sound of retching. Before I could react, Roxy threw up—directly into my eye. I raced to the bathroom to wash it out, while my girlfriend found the whole ordeal hilarious. Despite the mishap, we adored Roxy, and Andree has always shared my deep love for dogs. We look forward to fostering or adopting when we return to New Orleans.

“My sister Lulu was a devoted dog lover. She rescued greyhounds from racetracks and cared for them with immense love. Tragically, she and her partner Missy died in a heartbreaking accident in Colorado, along with one of their dogs, Daisy. Just before her passing, Lulu had laid her favorite greyhound, Patrick, to rest in the same river where she later lost her life.

“In the wake of this tragedy, I felt compelled to ensure my sister’s last greyhound, Sugar, was safely transported from Marble, Colorado, to our grieving mother in New Orleans. Sugar became a source of comfort for my mom, who has always been surrounded by dogs—mostly mutts, but also two German shepherds and, more recently, a beloved pitbull named Nikki, whom she lost just a few years ago. Dogs have brought her solace and joy even during the hardest times.

“Lulu’s commitment to her pets, including her parrot, and her passion for rescuing dogs deeply influenced me. Her belief that buying expensive pedigree dogs is unconscionable when so many mistreated and unwanted dogs need homes inspired the creation of “Partly Cloudy Dog.” The song raises awareness about adopting foster pets, and the accompanying video showcases the joy animals bring to our lives.

“I feel profoundly connected to Lulu’s devotion to rescuing dogs—it’s one of my fondest memories of her life and legacy.

“Though owning a dog in a small New York City apartment is challenging, I’m fortunate to share frequent visits with Levon, the dog of my friend, neighbor, and producer, James. Levon often keeps us company in the studio, including during the creation of He/Hymn.

“As space and time allow, I hope to adopt from Villalobos Pitbull Rescue in New Orleans. I’m also donating a portion of the song’s royalties to the rescue and plan to extend this support to other shelters nationally.”
