Alt-rock greats Buffalo Tom are back with a new album, Jump Rope, due out a little later this year.

But first, the Massachusetts trio – comprised of Bill Janovitz (vocals, guitar), Chris Colbourn (bass, vocals) and Tom Maginnis (drums) – are prepping the release of the LP’s first single “Helmet,” which will be available across all digital platforms this Friday. And today, the band premiered the Marley Maginnis-directed video on another site, but is available for viewing below.

“As with most things in Buffalo Tom, we have a chemistry and a natural sound that emerges no matter how we try to manipulate it,” explains guitarist Bill Janovitz. “‘Helmet’ is a prime example of this phenomenon, a song that could be at home on any of our previous records, but I associate it mostly with the layered crisp sounds of Big Red Letter Day.”

In early December, Boston fans were treated to a preview of songs at their sold-out Paradise show. Buffalo Tom rings in the new year, however, with a sold-out show at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Saturday, January 13th. Further tour dates and album details to be announced.

“We are happy to still be around and have anyone coming to see us, never mind to release our tenth long-player Jump Rope,” says guitarist Bill Janovitz.

In the interim, you can catch Buffalo Tom performing the opening theme song to the hopeful new NBC sitcom Extended Family, starring John Cryer, Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison.
