LISTEN: Tuff Sunshine Shares ‘Legwork’
New album, Vanity Matrix, out now

Since its creation in 2012, Brooklyn’s Tuff Sunshine has served as the creative vehicle for my longtime Facebook friend Johnny Leitera.
His song “Legwork,” originally released as a one-off single in 2022, is back as one of the highlights of Leitera’s excellent new album Vanity Matrix.
“The Vanity Matrix is the intersection of the hollow promises of social media stats, aging in public, comfortable hiking shoes and praying that when your time comes it’s as quick and painless as possible,” he proclaims.
And “Legwork,” with its idiosyncratic rock swagger and Eastern-inspired rhythms, is one of the album’s best tracks.

“The first two lines of this song came off of a Nextdoor post that I was reading about my neighborhood in Brooklyn,” Leitera says. ‘I did the legwork, I followed through.’ It was about fighting a parking ticket or something; I liked the sound of that as an opening. The lyrics are about banging your head against the wall as an indie artist in today’s music industry/life in general these days.”
Rock & Roll Globe is happy to share the video for “Legwork” today on the site.
“The video features a loop of someone continuously fishing but not quite landing ‘The Big One,’ which I thought was quite appropriate considering the subject matter,” he explains.
Johnny’s got a great rock voice, and Vanity Matrix showcases his talent across the kind of songcraft fans of the Eels, Beck and Olivia Tremor Control — only with a New York attitude interwoven throughout.
