arms around the world Shares ‘warmth of winter’
Eponymous debut out now

As much as Seattle’s been known historically speaking as ground zero for the American grunge movement, don’t forget the city’s roots in power pop as well.
And helping us remind ourselves of the region that brought us the likes of The Fastbacks and The Moberlys comes arms around the world, which blends its love for power pop with an experimental sensibility in a style both fresh and familiar.
The brainchild of Jon Rimmerman, one of the foremost voices in boutique wine culture when he’s not making music, arms around the world — like a good Bordeaux — harbors a sound that’s been allowed to age gracefully over the last 30-odd years he’s been in Seattle as a writer and entrepreneur.
So last year, in a now-or-never moment, Rimmerman showed up at Hidden City Studios in Santa Barbara, California, and persuaded Grammy-nominated producer Elliott Lanam (Katy Perry, Depeche Mode) to record arms around the world. He played every instrument across two weeks of recording, capturing experiments — such as placing a mic inside a hollow body Rickenbacker 330 while running the sound through two, three, sometimes four tube amps simultaneously. One track was first laid down in a California motel room with a 1964 Super Reverb amp, one mic, and an overturned wastebasket as a hi-hat.

The new LP is out now, but Rock & Roll Globe is honored to premiere the video for its swirling new single “warmth of winter” today on the site.
“’warmth of winter’ was written in a moment of isolation from the world and from the woman I love,” Rimmerman explains of the song, which you can check out below. “I was in a house without any heat, only a few embers in the fireplace. In the dead cold of winter, I had this moment when I recognized what she did for me. How her warmth was deep inside my soul. And I never told her how much I loved her. How is that possible? I don’t know. But I knew one voice wasn’t going to fix it, so I stacked nearly 12 of my vocals on top of each other — all with slightly different tones to send a message loud and clear, thoughts and feelings to match what I should have whispered a long time ago.”
The first arms around the world LP is out now on Shy Sounds.
