Did you make it to your local record store today?

We did. And in addition to finding some choice used copies of Spacemen 3’s Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To and Count Basie’s 1975 trio session For The Second Time among others, here’s what we scored from the RSD: Black Friday bin.

If you missed out, there’s always Discogs, kids. But its much cooler to get out and support your local spot.

INXS Shabooh Shoobah Rarities (Rhino)

INXS Shabooh Shoobah Rarities (Rhino)

If you don’t know Shabooh, I’m not sure what to tell you other than click here and take in the most underrated INXS album, the one that first brought them attention here in the United States. This special collection contains previously released bonus material initially included in the 40th Anniversary digital deluxe edition of the album, including b-sides, remixes and live cuts from their star turn at the 1983 US Festival. The remix of the LP’s biggest hit, “The One Thing,” is worth the price of the set alone.

Souls of Mischief 93 ‘Til Infinity: The Remixes (Legacy Recordings)

Souls of Mischief 93 ‘Til Infinity: The Remixes (Legacy Recordings)

Now that André 3000 named one of those long-ass flute jams after it, we expect a renewed interest in Souls of Mischief and their indelible debut 93 ‘Til Infinity. This RSD exclusive celebrates its 30th anniversary with a newly compiled remix EP centered around its melodic, Billy Cobham-sampling title cut, including versions of the song made available on vinyl for the first time ever. Few cats that year represented a true alternative to the gangsta bravado of their West Coast counterparts quite like A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai.

Olivia Rodrigo Guts: The Secret Tracks EP (Geffen)

If you were lucky enough to score one of the 7500 copies Geffen pressed, you can enjoy these four tasty gems originally added on as secret bonus tracks on different vinyl editions of Guts, including the ripping, St. Vincent-guesting “Obsessed” and the Springsteen-esque acoustic strummer “Girl I’ve Always Been.” Here’s hoping these tunes make it to streaming someday soon.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) [45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition] (Rhino)
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) [45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition] (Rhino)

This Captain classic emerged from the result of its original incarnation (Bat Chain Puller) being held up by the label (Frank Zappa’s DisCreet Records). So Beefheart ditched the whole scene and created a whole new version of the LP called Shiny Beast, which would be praised by critics as one of the very best studio works of his career, right up there with Safe As Milk and Trout Mask Replica. This 45th anniversary deluxe edition of Beast features the original album, recut from the original master tapes at Bernie Grundman Mastering, plus an additional LP with twelve previously unreleased demos, rough mixes and alternate versions from the Warner Bros. recording sessions.

Meat Puppets Forbidden Places (Real Gone)

Meat Puppets Forbidden Places (Real Gone)

Arizona’s cowpunk kings the Meat Puppets ditched SST at the end of the 80s, kicking off the new decade with their 1991 London Records debut Forbidden Places. It remains some of the band’s most accessible material in their canon, the Psychedelic melodicism of such early gems as Meat Puppets II and Up On The Sun coming into clearer focus as their possibilities in the studio are expanded. Forbidden Places was never pressed on vinyl until now, and it’s great to secure a copy of this boysenberry and black swirl beauty and listen to the Kirkwood Bros as nature intended.
