WATCH: Laura Zarougian Shares Video for “New Used Car”

As it’s done for decades, New York’s Ulster County continues to attract some of the country’s finest talent to its quaint environs.

And it is the famed Woodstock/Saugerties area of the region that serves as the backdrop for the latest video from Laura Zarougian, known for her distinctive take on the Americana genre with a sound she calls “Armenian Cowgirl.”

Following up her previous single “Double Sided,” “New Used Car” is a song with roots in the Midwest that offers insight into an uproarious relationship.

“’New Used Car’ is a song about trust and belonging set against the backdrop of midwest highways and expansive skies,” Zarougian tells Rock & Roll Globe. “I wrote this song while living in Chicago. I was learning how to write songs and find my crowd. The song paints a vivid picture of a tumultuous relationship, with lines like ‘New used car with no license plate on it / Staring at me like I was a target.’”

As far as influences for the song are concerned, Zarougian proudly wears them on her sleeve.

“I hear Lucinda Williams’ influence in the lyrics to this song, specifically her nods to the open highway,” she proclaims. “I also am drawn to Lilly Hiatt’s grungy, spirited style and energy. We were listening to her album Waking Proof a lot during the recording process. Both artists truly pave their own paths and follow their own artistic visions.

For the song’s video, which we are happy to premiere today on the site, she offers fans a taste of her current digs in Ulster, namely the vintage market she runs in Saugerties.

“We recorded the music video at a great venue called the Colony in Woodstock,” Zarougian explains. “At the time, we were in the middle of a heat wave and I was seven months pregnant. I was doing my best to cool off backstage.

“We had workshopped a bunch of different ideas for the video, but landed on a more documentary approach with Seamus, our awesome filmmaker. He filmed us backstage doing our vocal warmups and running through the harmonies. Seamus suggested we shoot the b roll at our vintage market in Saugerties, NY. We sell cowgirl boots and vinyl records there. The side hustle is real.”

Zarougian is currently putting the finishing touches on the follow-up to her 2023 debut Nayri, which will be out early next year.
