Andrew WK, El-P, Thurston Moore, Aesop Rock, Kimya Dawson, Steve Albini and others celebrate the short life of an extraordinary cat in upcoming book-and-record set
The last 10 years has been a crazy, crazy ride for all of us, which makes little miracles such as the meteoric rise of beloved Internet celebrity cat Lil BUB all the sweeter.
Found as a stray kitten nestled in a tool shed, BUB was the first cat in recorded history born with osteopetrosis, an extraordinarily rare bone condition. Additionally, she had an underdeveloped jaw (causing her tongue to perpetually protrude), no teeth, polydactyly (extra toes/claws), and enormous green eyes.
Weeks after rescuing her, Bridavsky shared BUB’s story online and soon her unique appearance and undeniable magic connected with a global audience, garnering millions of fans while raising awareness and hundreds of thousands of dollars for adoptable pets worldwide.
During her short eight years on this planet, her celebrity was only rivaled by that of Grumpy Cat. But then again, Grumps never had her own talk show, was the subject of an award-winning, feature-length documentary (VICE’s Lil BUB & Friendz), starred in her own Animal Planet primetime television special, or recorded the Billboard chart-topping album Science & Magic. Michelle Obama, Ke$ha, Robert De Niro, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew W.K., Jack Black, Fred Armisen and Kelley Deal (The Breeders) are among those she considered her people.

The life and legacy of Lil BUB, the world’s most cherished cat, will be celebrated with the release of Lil BUB: The Earth Years, a hand-numbered, limited-edition, 376-page coffee table book and exclusive 7” record, Transmissions From Space, (featuring two new pieces composed by Lil BUB herself, from her intergalactic afterlife) releasing April 23.
Lil BUB: The Earth Years was lovingly compiled by her “dude” Mike Bridavsky and features beautiful photos and a complete chronological, biographical commentary about her extraordinary life as well as an intro from Jackson Galaxy, foreword by Steve Albini, and exclusive quotes from Whoopi Goldberg, Jack Black, El-P (Run The Jewels), Andrew W.K., Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Kimya Dawson, David Yow (The Jesus Lizard), Aesop Rock, and more.
The casebound, 9”x 9” book is limited to 3500 numbered copies (3000 standard, 500 deluxe edition), with the deluxe versions signed by Mike Bridavsky and artist Aaron Tanner and packaged inside a silver-embossed slipcase paired with a full color 7” picture disc of the music (standard edition contains regular black vinyl). An additional 80-page book of Lil BUB-inspired artwork titled Transmissions From Earth: Original Art Inspired by Lil BUB is also included in the deluxe package, along with a 2” minted commemorative coin housed in individually-numbered, wooden display boxes.
What’s more, 30 percent of the book’s proceeds will benefit Lil BUB’s Big FUND, a 501c3 non-profit established by her family to advocate for animals with special needs. Pre-order both versions of Lil BUB: The Earth Years here.
“Ever since BUB landed on Earth back in the summer of 2011, she has brought immeasurable positivity, hope, and happiness to millions of people all over our planet,” Bridavsky said in a public statement. “Since the moment I took the first photo of BUB’s remarkable face, I’ve had the dream of making a deluxe coffee table photo book featuring her photographs. And as with all things BUB, everything came together serendipitously after she departed back into space and our longtime friend and collaborator Aaron Tanner (who was responsible for designing BUB’s website, and most of her merchandise) began designing and manufacturing coffee table books for notable bands. To commemorate the unmistakable good she brought to us in her 8+ short years on Earth, Aaron and I have decided to collaborate on this beautiful book in honor of one of the Most Amazing Cats On the Planet: Lil BUB.”
Bridavsky will also be appearing at this year’s virtual CatCon From Your Couch conference April 17-18, where he’ll be interviewed by Ozzy Osbourne bassist Blasko about the legacy of Lil BUB and his life with the feline enigma. $1 from every ticket sold will benefit Lil BUB’s Big FUND.
Lil BUB’s Big FUND is an amazing charity that exists to advocate for special needs companion animals and build a community that celebrates and fosters the human animal bond with a focus on animals who are the most difficult to adopt, the most expensive to care for, and who are at a high risk of euthanasia.
Lil Bub’s Big FUND provides grants to shelters nationwide and partners with shelters to create special needs foster program initiatives. Through our work, we visit schools to promote kindness and inclusion and share BUB’s message of overcoming adversity with the knowledge that the things that make us different are worthy of being seen and appreciated.
