One of the great albums of 2024 we completely overlooked in our Top 30 was Majician by famed New York City rapper Kurious.

Executive produced by the late MF DOOM before his passing and produced by Mono En Stereo, the album serves as a testament to the friendship shared between Kurious and DOOM who shared a kindred vision of hip-hop. And released 30 years after his auspicious 1994 debut A Constipated Monkey, the man born Jorge Antonio Alvarez hasn’t missed a step with Majician, evidenced on its latest single “1984” and its Carlos Los Maldonado-directed video.

On the song, he explains “I grew up with Rocksteady being right across the street from me in the 80s. But then, you also have George Orwell’s 1984. So, I said if I’m going to pick a year, let me do 1984 because (the book) also has stuff that relates to today. I’m not really going into too many conspiracy theories in those lyrics, but it was just a nice fit…with the b-boy shit and then picking ‘84, due to George Orwell’s 1984.”

Don’t sleep on Kurious who, on the cusp of 55, is proving that hip-hop’s elder statesman still have plenty of innovation left in ‘em. Especially with a producer like Mono En Stereo behind him on the console.

“He just started sending me so many beats,” Kurious recalls. “It finally clicked and I felt I had found my home sound. And sonically it’s similar to what DOOM always did — raw, gritty samples, stripped-down — but with the right switches, it’s just right.”
