Redd Kross Return with Double LP, North American Tour

California rockers Redd Kross are back just in time for summer with a new double album and North American tour.

In reference to the impetus behind the decision to make it a double, guitarist Jeff McDonald reveals: “I’m usually the one who says our albums have to be ‘ten songs, no more.’ But we had all these great songs, and we wanted to let them all breathe. So the album had to be 18 songs.”

The LP, due out on June 28th via In The Red Records, is a self-titled affair produced by Josh Klinghoffer, who also plays drums. The original choice to keep rhythm was Steven McDonald’s Melvins bandmate Dale Crover, but he unfortunately had to pass because he was recovering from spinal surgery. So Klinghoffer, last seen as a touring guitarist for Pearl Jam, sat behind the kit while also setting up Redd Kross in his studio amidst his championship level stable of gears and guitar.

“Josh is 13 years younger than me, and he’s like the younger brother I never had,” said Steven in a press release. “He’s a super-talented musician who’s really good at being supportive, and he’s really in-tune with a band’s internal dynamics. And he had us on our best behavior, not wanting to disappoint Josh! His studio is like the most incredible vintage guitar shop — he would take great delight in pulling out some rare instrument or effects box to inspire us.”

The tour, meanwhile, begins on July 2nd in San Diego and runs through August 13th in Los Angeles, with dates in such major cities as Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Dallas along the way. In addition, Redd Kross are also slated to play the Punk Rock Bowling festival on May 24th in Las Vegas. See below for the complete list of dates.

Redd Kross will be released amid a flurry of events for the group, whose 45th anniversary as a band is this year. In addition to the record, also on deck is a memoir, Now You’re One Of Us, due out in October as well as a documentary directed by Andrew Reich, entitled Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story, currently out on the film festival circuit. 

“Our message is, ‘What is art?’” declares Jeff. “Who gets to decide? And maybe these rock-stars who suddenly decide they’re fine artists and Hollywood actors who decide they’re punk-rock singers should, you know, stay in their lane.”

The album’s sticky sweet opening number, “Candy Coloured Catastrophe,” serves as the first single, the video of which can be seen below along with the track listing and tour dates. Pre-order Redd Kross here.
