How to Find The Super Deluxe Edition of the First Rory Gallagher Album for Under $35
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2024 with a steal of a deal
It was probably about two months ago when I was browsing on Amazon and impulsively purchased the 50th anniversary box set for the first solo album by Irish guitar god Rory Gallagher.
It was my Uncle George who first put me onto the artistry of the Cork-born musician when I was a teen. However, I didn’t start picking up his albums until I began finding them in the used CD section of Mr. Cheapo’s on Long Island, and spent a good portion of the 2000s immersed in the electricity of such choice works as Blueprint, Irish Tour ’74 and Photo Finish. Then, the one clerk I used to chat with at the store was all like, “Well, have you heard of Taste?” And then I learned all about the power R&B beat trio Gallagher had been part of from 1966 until his departure in 1970, picking up Live Taste, which was released in the same year as the eponymous solo debut I have sitting before me as I write this.
Rory Gallagher the album, originally released on May 21, 1971, found the musician reverting back to the power trio format, working alongside two Belfast-based musicians in Gerry McAvoy on bass and drummer Wilgar Campbell.
“Over the years I’d seen them in Ireland and they were over here for a little while, I’d seen and heard them in various shapes and sizes,” Gallagher told Sounds in a revealing interview from April 10, 1971, which was reprinted in the liner notes of this 2021 box set. “I tried out quite a few musicians and I tried them, maybe the fact they played together was a help, but as soon as I heard them, they seemed relaxing to play with. You could just let your breath sink and let it happen. The main reason first of all was just good for the record because they grasped the songs that I was going to use and since then with rehearsals it looks like it could last quite a while. I’d like to think it could, and I’m pretty happy with them, very happy.”
The new trio was largely well-received in the music press at the time, no doubt enamored by the fiery blues rock on display across such scorching cuts as “Laundromat,” “Hands Up” and “It Takes Time.” The album also finds Gallagher exploring the realms of British folk on “Just The Smile” and “I’m Not Surprised,” evoking contemporary guitar heroes like Davy Graham and Bert Jansch in the silken intricacy of his six-string delivery.
“Wave Myself Goodbye” is another acoustic number, a talking blues song featuring New Orleans style piano provided by Vincent Crane from the band Atomic Rooster (Rory’s brother Donal had been acting as tour manager for them). Gallagher flexes his skills on saxophone in the next song, a jazz number called “Can’t Believe It’s True.”
The deluxe edition of Rory Gallagher is still on sale on Amazon for just $34.94, down 72 percent from its manufacturer’s retail price. In addition to a remastered version of the original LP, this generous version also includes 30 previously unreleased alternate takes, a six-song 1971 BBC Radio John Peel Sunday Concert, & four 1971 BBC Radio Sounds of the Seventies session tracks, all mastered at Abbey Road Studios. The box includes a previously unreleased 50-minute DVD of Rory’s first solo concert for the `Pop Deux’ television show and a 32-page hardcover book. Needless to say, if you’re a Rory fan, it’s very much worth your time.
“I’m my own man, just do whatever I please,” Gallagher told Sounds about venturing into the solo arena for the first time. “There’s no why or reasons or anything else, it’s just that things worked out and everyone’s happier for it, I suppose.”
